Linda's Diary

Diary from the Past:

It’s a peaceful spring day and I am enjoying some coffee while I have some down time. Willy just took off for his long haul drive 700 miles for his job. The boys are about to wake up and get ready for school then I’ll walk them to school. While the boys are at school I think I will clean the house a little bit then relax in the afternoon sun until it is time to walk back and pick the boys up from school.

Diary from the Present:

Willy came home tonight. It was so nice to see him after his long business trip. I have started to notice that he is starting to act a little different. The boys have picked up on it too and but he is good at heart. Why can’t they see that in him like I can? They no longer show him the respect that I think they should be giving him after everything that we have done for them over the years.

"The Lottery"

“The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson is a story about a little town that each year takes part in a town wide “Lottery” where each town’s person draws a slip of paper to determine their fate. The theme that I have chosen for this blog post is “stoning”. In the olden days stoning was used as a form punishment in front of the town’s people as an example to the other town’s people what could happen if they chose to do that act. The stoning was mostly done in the center of town so everyone could see it because the center of town or city square was a very popular gathering place. In the story, the stoning was done by the town’s people in the center of town much like stoning were back in the olden days. When you get to the end of the story it really throws you for a loop when you hear that everyone even the women and children pick up rocks and throw them at the women. Even though the men, women, and children didn’t seem to show even an ounce of restraint or sadness while throwing the rocks, it seems as if the city center is a real symbol for the in the punishment that had to take place for “the lottery”.

In many third world countries today, they are no stranger to stoning and deaths done as an example. Stonings were used hundreds of years ago and are still being used today as a way to kill a town’s member for stealing, rebellion of the higher leaders or in some places an “eye for an eye”.

Girl Imitation

Remember to always mind your manners, and never talk back. Use good high hygiene, take showers everyday and put your dirty clothes in the hamper after you put clean ones on. Do your chores as you are asked to without any grief or back talk. Always remember to pick up your toys and put them back in their proper places. Don’t talk back to your teachers; they know what they are talking about. Get all of your homework done on time and make sure it is right. But what if I don’t like the homework? You still need to finish it to get good grades. Always be yourself around girls and don’t try to put on an act because they don’t like that. If you find a girl that you think is the one, make sure you treat her with the upmost respect and make her feel loved. Always talk to the girl’s parents before asking out their daughter, it will make them very happy that you care enough to do so. Cherish all of your found memories as you grow older and don’t forget to take the time to look back at your childhood memories. As you start a family, remember that they are the most important thing in your life and spend as much time together as you can because time will fly by and before you know it your kids will be grown up. The most important thing is to live each day as if it was your last!

Test Prep #2

My test prep. word is Alliteration. At first I couldn't really remember what Alliteration was until I started to look it up online and watch videos on it. Alliteration is the repetition of the same sound at the beginning of two or more consecutive words near one another. A well known example of Alliteration is "Sally sells seashells at the seashore".

Here is a funny little video about Alliteration.

Test Review

I picked more than just one word because they all pretty much go together. The words that I picked are Foot, Stressed and Unstressed words. I picked these words because I still get confused about how to really pick apart a poem using feet per line and stressed and unstressed. I was able to do a quick Youtube search to find a video that helped me understand how to do this a little better.

Test Question: True or False- Iambic Pentameter is the most often used meter of poetry.

Howl Imitation

I see a generation full of corruption

A generation that says one thing but then does another

Represents views of their peers only later to crush their dreams

Change is spoken but is never followed through

I see a generation backed by politicians who only look out for themselves

Who are quickly to pass the blame when tragedy strikes instead of confronting

the real problem because it may be the easy way out

A generation that thrives for the quick fix

That searches for the get rich quick schemes or anyway to do less work but still get paid

I see a generation that shoots down the hopes and dreams of their peers to only gain

in their own accomplishments

A generation that makes claims and accusations but overall lacks truth and a backbone

That hides behind a falsified mask in order to cover up their true self

That lacks in respect for the character of older generations

I see a generation that is corrupt from the layers of problems from the past…
